WATER RESTRICTIONS ARE IN EFFECT

Posted on: 2008-01-23
• Residents and businesses of Okeechobee, St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Hendry and Glades counties are limited to a one-day-per-week landscape irrigation schedule with two 'watering windows.'
• Odd street addresses may irrigate lawns and landscapes on Mondays between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. or 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
• Even street addresses may irrigate lawns and landscapes on Thursdays between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. or 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
• Residents and businesses with more than five acres have expanded irrigation hours, between 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. or 4:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on their designated irrigation day.
• Residents and businesses in Lee and Collier counties are limited to one-day-a-week watering during specific four-hour 'watering windows' directly associated with their unique street addresses (page 3 of this PDF).
• Hand-watering with one hose fitted with an automatic shut-off nozzle is allowed for 10 minutes per day for landscape stress relief and to prevent plant die-off.
• Low-volume irrigation, including the use of drip and microjet systems that apply water directly to plant root zones, is not restricted but should be voluntarily reduced.
• Additional watering days and times will be allocated for the establishment of new lawns and landscapes.
• No restrictions apply to other outside water uses, such as for car and boat washing, pressure cleaning of paved surfaces, decorative fountains and water-based recreation (e.g. swimming pools, water slides).
• Golf courses must reduce their allocated water use by 45 percent.

Recycle Recycle Recycle!!

Posted on: 2008-01-06
Responsible teenagers interested in our BB&T recycling program:
This is a worthwhile project and you earn community service hours. It involves picking up the recycle bins at the clubhouse every Thursday, placing them curbside and returning them to the clubhouse. There are only 1-2 filled recycle bins every week. Everyone should be participating especially the tennis camps, tennis luncheons, and clubhouse functions. We encourage all residents to please get involved and encourage your teens to volunteer. I suggest volunteers sign up for 3 months at a time or longer if they wish. Please call Kathy Lakey 994-4983 to sign up.
Thanks, Kathy Lakey

Butts Road Landscaping

Posted on: 2005-10-10
The City advises that trees can, in fact, be planted in the City owned Butts Road easement. The letter (see link below) concludes with, “the opportunity exists to plant tress to within 6 feet of the edge of the pavement, without having to construct curbing, owing to the fact that the posted speed limit is 30 miles per hour. To this end, staff has identified areas that meet the 6-foot ‘clear zone’. These areas appear on the accompanying aerials as irregular, yellow striped parcels.”

The “yellow striped parcels” show there is room to plant a nearly continuous row of trees along the north side of Butts Road, between the road and the bike path. Thanks to Susan Whelchel, Leif Ahnell, and Carmen Annunziato the City appears to have put a lot of effort into this:
Aerial Survey The aerials appear to be organized so that they progress from west to east as you move down the pages. This is a large PDF file and it may take a minute for it to open onto your screen. You can ZOOM in to read most of the copy and detail.

Orignals of these documents are on file at the Clubhouse.

Work is far from complete. Funds need to be raised to pay for landscaping, and arrangements must be made for ongoing maintenance. If you would like to help make this happen, please contact Dan Cope.

Need Audio-Visual Donations for Middle School

Don Estridge High Tech Middle School
1798 NW Spanish River Blvd.
Boca Raton, FL 33431
(561) 989-7800

This letter is written to introduce an amazing program, and some amazing students, at our school. Broadcast Communications is a course offering at Don Estridge because Debra Johnson; the principal, and Mark Stansell; the course instructor, shared a vision two years ago that students in the middle grades could indeed engage in high quality filmmaking and storytelling through digital video production.

Two years into the program some very remarkable things are taking place. Students in Mr. Stansell’s class are reading and writing on a very advanced level, putting together a daily informational program called “The Dragon’s DEN.” We invite you to stop in and visit our working studio to take a look at what 6th through 8th graders can do in this high level class.

The digital editing lab our students use is equipped with eleven G5 Macintosh computers and a 3.5 terabyte raid server for storage. The software package includes Final Cut Pro DV, Soundtrack, Livetype, and the Macromedia Suite of Fireworks, Dreamweaver and Flash. You would be amazed at how efficiently our students use these tools.

Unfortunately, our production studio is not as well equipped and therefore we are reaching out to you and the community as a whole to help. We currently have only 2 camcorders, two studio monitors, 4 wired lapel microphones and a mixture of donated computers for research and a makeshift teleprompter. We have no sets, save an 8’ X 8’ X 1’ stage built by a generous dad. We are looking for set pieces and furniture, backdrops, curtains or any set building sections you may not be using at this time. We are also hopeful that you may have equipment that you are no longer using and therefore are willing to donate to our students for this course. Obviously we would be happy to accept cash donations for day-to-day expenses, equipment repairs, etc.

The DEHTMS’s Morning Show, “The Dragon’s Den” currently has 3 camcorders that are not working properly. We have 2 Cannon ZR40’s and 1 JVC GR-D290 U that are broken. We cannot get them repaired due to a lack of funding for equipment, upgrades. Etc. If you know of someone who can repair our cameras, and give us a break on the cost please email Mark Stansell Broadcast Communications Teacher at: stansellma@palmbeach.k12.fl.us

It goes without saying that our students deserve the best that we can give them. We hope you will join us as we continue to build on this excellent program.

Thank you for supporting all the great things our children do.

Sincerely,
Donna M. Edwards, Parent Volunteer

Lynn Insurance Development / Landscaping (Butts Rd.)

Posted on: 2005-05-26
The efforts of Mindy Powers, the rest of our Board, and our residents, to improve landscaping along Butts Rd. will deliver long term benefits to BB&T, Lynn Insurance, and to the City of Boca Raton. A special thank you goes out to our City Council representative, Susan Whelchel, who has been especially helpful with these efforts.

We are fortunate to be represented so well and to have such good neighbors as Lynn Insurance.

While there is still much work to be done, efforts to date have managed to steer us onto a path that could deliver a far better buffer and appearance than our community enjoys today. In addition, at the Boca Raton Community Appearance Board meeting on May 24, several of the Lynn people commented that they felt the landscape revisions are also better for them. This was a clear win/win and was accomplished with zero financial cost to BB&T and with the gracious support of Lynn Insurance.

The persistence and tact of Mindy, our Board members, and residents, also resulted in an “on the record” commitment from Lynn Insurance to cooperate in landscaping the north side of Butts Rd. if / when approval is given to landscape that area. More work is needed to secure those approvals and our Board is already hard at work to make that happen. This was an important step.

PS: Click here to see revised sight lines showing the improved view with the new placement of trees on the south side of Butts at 60’ from the new building. At this distance these trees will completely screen the view of the building from most of BB&T by the time they reach 42’ in height.

The undergrowth in the landscape plans will likely be the equivalent of a berm and will immediately screen the development at the street level.

PPS: Landscaping along the north side of Butts Rd. will also benefit BB&T, Lynn Insurance, and the City. Trees 22' high planted on the north side of the road will provide an immediate screen of our wall to even persons standing on the top floor of the new Lynn Insurance building, they will provide an improved buffer for BB&T, and they will create a better appearance for this area and for the City overall. It seems reasonable to believe that this should improve property values for this entire area.
